Summary
The Profession of Publishing Music provides readers with an exploration of the music publishing industry, detailing its history, business practices, and legal considerations. Beginning by detailing the impact of the printing press on the distribution of music, the book then progresses through the development of copyright laws and the advent of new technologies influencing the preservation and dissemination of creative works.

The book thoroughly covers the day-to-day functioning of the music publishing industry, discussing business structures, income streams, and the significant business aspects of songwriting. It also explores the implications of international music publishing, including the cross-territorial challenges and strategies for maximizing royalty earnings. Additionally, the book addresses topical issues such as sampling, working with union musicians, sales, and acquisitions of music catalogs, as well as prospective developments within the industry.

The Profession of Publishing Music is well-suited for programs in music business and serves as a practical guide for students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. It offers clarity and depth to the inner workings of music publishing and is a valuable resource for those embarking on careers in the music industry, particularly those focusing on the business and legal aspects of music publishing.
