Summary
The Gravity of Typography: Exploring Type Across Various Design Mediums is a visual guide that provides students with an understanding of key principles of typography, as well as its importance and impact in design work. The book demonstrates that regardless of medium, typography is a critical component that has the power to make or break a design.

Drawing on her vast experience as a graphic designer, Karyn Jimenez-Elliott has created an innovative and visually demonstrative guide that effectively introduces readers to how typography can enhance designs across a variety of mediums, including branding, print design, packaging and product design, editorial and publication, design for web, event design and environmental graphics, designing for social impact, and personal branding and portfolio work. The book highlights a diverse range of work and real-world examples from Jimenez-Elliott’s colleagues, friends, former classmates, and students, as well as examples of her own work. Designer’s project notes, written in their own words, accompany each example and help readers understand the thought process behind developing logos, selecting fonts, considering print and digital delivery of design work, creating a portfolio that reflects their personal brand, and more.

Approachable, immersive, and grounded in visual impact, The Gravity of Typography is an essential textbook for courses and programs in graphic design.

"Professor Jimenez, for the past two decades, I have been looking for a thorough project-based book that examines typography by itself and its role in design as a whole and I always felt like there was something off or just not enough about the dozens of books I reviews - leading me to need like 3 to 4 different books to use as a teaching resource. Thank you for writing/making your book. I read it from cover to cover and have now adopted it into my Type course at Troy University. I'm also going to retroactively go back and highly encourage all type students from the past few years to get a copy."
Chris Stagl, MFA, Associate Professor of Graphic Design, Assistant Chair of Art and Design

"The Gravity of Typography features a refreshing look at the importance of typography as a key element in graphic design. The topics included in the book cover a wide range of areas from branding to digital design. As described by the author, Karyn Jimenez-Elliott, as the 'anti-textbook,' the written information contained is concise and complemented by incredible examples of designs created by artists ranging from professional graphic designers to students of design. The hand-written accent notes paired with the imagery allows for targeted references making this text easily navigable.

The collection of designers and their designs are exceptional! Jimenez-Elliott’s curation of projects to highlight are a credit to her, not only as a practicing graphic designer but as a design professor. The projects included in this text are for designers of all levels to engage in, whether you are a designer that is just starting out or for designers needing to refresh their own portfolios.
The Gravity of Typography stands out among the humdrum standard texts for typography by focusing on basics of type design, but also providing how-to’s that excite the reader and motivate them to want to use type in exciting ways. This book is a must-have for any designer!"
