Summary
System Innovation: A Holistic Approach to Disrupting with Love and Human Caring inspires healthcare leaders and professionals to innovate healthcare habits, practices, policies, functions, and their own leadership style to achieve desired outcomes.

It employs a holistic approach to leadership and management, providing practical actions for health systems to deploy to disrupt the current environment so a more connected culture, grounded in love and caring, can emerge. Frameworks and theories emphasized include cultural transformation theory, caring science, and design thinking.

Calling for a brave visionary approach to leadership, System Innovation is an ideal resource for leadership courses at all levels of nursing and healthcare-related education, as well as in professional settings.

Dr. Julie Kennedy Oehlert began her career as a nursing assistant at age 14 and has held a variety of clinical, operational, strategic, and consultative healthcare roles. She holds a doctorate in nursing practice in health innovations and leadership from University of Minnesota and is a perpetual student of design thinking. She was awarded the healthcare professional innovation award by the Beryl Institute in 2020. Her passion is to lovingly disrupt current healthcare environments so that loving and caring cultures can emerge.
Dr. Kathleen Sitzman holds a Ph.D. in nursing education and conducts research related to conveying and sustaining caring in online classrooms. In 2015, she co-authored a book and accompanying Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) entitled “Caring Science, Mindful Practice: Implementing Jean Watson’s Human Caring Theory.” This MOOC is offered twice a year, free of charge and open to anyone, and remains in high demand. Learners come from all over the world and are from healthcare as well as a wide array of other disciplines. Because learners consistently express interest in additional learning opportunities related to caring science, she co-authored “Watson’s Caring in the Digital World.” Her passion is to help envision caring-loving possibilities for self and others through the study of caring science principles coupled with the use of simple, mindful micro-practices at work and beyond.

"Being in healthcare for over 15 years, it is quite refreshing reading about the heart of what we do. Oehlert and Sitzman have taken a strategic approach in defining many useful quality tools whilst using theory methodologies in a digestible way. This quick read is a must in your toolbox that can be referenced when thinking of how you can have synchronized harmony and collaboration amongst all disciplines. My favorite is the core analogy that gives your purpose… I will not give it all away, but absolutely loved the reference. As a former data analyst, I appreciate the value placed on utilizing data as a disrupter in a good way. Sit back, take it all in and then share the knowledge just as Oehlert and Sitzman did."
Reakweeda Zazay, MHA, NREMT, Manager Transplant Quality, The George Washington University Hospital

"In System Innovation: A Holistic Approach to Disrupting with Love and Human Caring, Dr. Oehlert and Ms. Sitzman challenge the conventional norms of healthcare systems by introducing groundbreaking innovations rooted in love and human caring. Their writing is not only clear and educational, but practical and inspiring, making it a valuable read for anyone in the healthcare field. One of the many strengths of the book is the seamless blend of theory and real-world application. The authors skillfully introduce concepts of healthcare practices and policies, and then follow up with relevant examples that are easily accessible to the reader. This book promotes a collaborative and growth-oriented approach that empowers healthcare clinicians to implement change in their own practice. The book successfully bridges the gap between leadership ideology and real-world application. It goes beyond theoretical concepts, providing concrete strategies to implement change and cultivate a more compassionate, human-centered approach. This book is a compelling read for those seeking to challenge the status quo and foster a culture of love and caring in healthcare."
