Summary
Philosophy of Happiness: Seeking Wisdom and a Life of Human Flourishing presents readers with an exploration into diverse perspectives on the concept of happiness, beginning with historical insights from ancient Greek and Roman philosophers and moving through medieval Christian and Buddhist viewpoints to contemporary philosophical and psychological reflections. The book offers a variety of considerations on how to incorporate happiness into one's life, recognizing that happiness is deeply personal and varies among individuals.

The text is organized into six chapters, each addressing a different angle of happiness—from ancient wisdom and pragmatic stoic advice to the impact of religious traditions and modern philosophers on the concept of happiness. It provides a rich palette of thoughts on living a meaningful and purposeful life, inviting readers to consider and practice self-knowledge, reflection, and the alignment of one's actions with personal values.

Philosophy of Happiness is ideal for courses in philosophy, ethics, and psychology. It offers foundational knowledge and practical insights suitable for students at various academic levels who wish to learn about the philosophy of happiness and apply principles of happiness to their daily lives.

Elaine Yoshikawa is an associate teaching professor in the School of Applied Sciences and Arts at Arizona State University, where she has taught courses, published articles, and given talks on happiness, virtue ethics, Christian and Buddhist ethics, business ethics, and spirituality. Her other research interests include psychology, music, religious studies, and computer science. Dr. Yoshikawa holds a Ph.D. in philosophy from Arizona State University and a B.A. from University of California, Berkeley.
