Summary
LGBTQ+ People with Intellectual Disabilities: Stories from the Rainbow Support Group fills a gap in the literature by providing readers with insight into the experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals living with intellectual disabilities (ID). The book underscores the unique intersectionality of LGBTQ+ and intellectual disabilities through observations and accounts from the Rainbow Support Group, a gathering established in 1998 in New Haven, Connecticut, with focus on supporting queer members with ID.

The book explores the challenges and breakthroughs related to sexual orientation and gender expression among the ID community in the Rainbow Support Group. It lays bare the often-overlooked reality that individuals with ID have complex sexual identities, challenging societal preconceived notions and biases. The book emphasizes the importances of creating affirming spaces for LGBTQ+ individuals who have been denied sexual expression opportunities, touching on themes of self-awareness, isolation, companionship, and the process of coming out.

LGBTQ+ People with Intellectual Disabilities is an ideal text for courses that address intellectual disability, LGBTQ+ studies, social work, human rights advocacy, and community leadership. The book is part of the Cognella Series on Families and Social Justice, a collection of textbooks that support core curriculum within family-related disciplines with emphasis on issues related to social justice, diversity, and equity.

John D. Allen holds a doctoral degree in educational leadership from Southern Connecticut State University, where he also received an M.S. in urban studies and B.S. in economics. He has over 30 years of experience supporting people with intellectual and other disabilities. Dr. Allen is the founder of the New Haven Pride Center, where he created and cofacilitated the Rainbow Support Group. His research focuses on how to support individuals with intellectual disabilities and other challenges to have opportunities for intimate relationships and sexual expression.

"I have a master's degree in special education, have been a consultant in Sexuality and Disability for more than 30 years, and am the co-creator of Circles, now in its 5th+ generation of updates. The new version of the Rainbow Support Group is long overdue. Having an ongoing relationship within the queer community is so important to an already marginalized group, or as is called tickled a Double Dose of Marginalization. Having support within the greater community of LGBTQ+ adults allows people with disabilities to experience the safety that is necessary to 'come out' without fear of retribution or reaction. We must thank John Allen for this breakthrough in true community for people without the places to find acceptance!"
