Summary
Introduction to the American Corrections System provides students with a carefully curated selection of readings that pertain to the criminal justice and corrections system.

The interactive ebook format allows students to read the text of each chapter and engage with digital learning activities—including graded discussion exercises and active links to additional online articles and resources—all within a single system.

Opening readings discuss the history of crime and punishment from early centuries to modern day, how offenders enter the corrections system, and different types of punishment. Additional readings center around the incarcerated population and the unique challenges posed by special populations in the corrections system, including the mentally ill, the medically ill, substance abusers, and women, among others. The text covers private prisons, parole and probation, and other community corrections. Closing readings focus on changing the correctional culture, finding programs that work, and what future issues may be within the field.

Designed to provide students with a concise yet informative overview, Introduction to the American Corrections System is an ideal resource for courses and programs in criminal justice and corrections.
