Summary
In Volume I of Connecting California, students traced the state’s history from early Indigenous culture to the Civil War era of the 1860s. Connecting California, Volume II: Selections in Modern American History picks up the story in 1870, following the completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869 and moving into the twenty-first century.

The interactive ebook format allows students to read the text of each chapter and engage with digital learning activities—including quizzes, activities, videos, and links to additional materials for further study—all within a single online platform.

Section I covers 1870 to 1920 and discusses how the state became increasingly connected to national and international events such as the progressive moment, expansion of trade in the Pacific region, and World War I. In Section II, students read about the growth of Southern California in the 1920s, resilience during the Great Depression, and demographic transitions in the World War II and post-war eras. Section III traces movements and challenges from the 1960s to recent times. Section IV provides an overview of California government, politics, and public policy issues.

Emphasizing primary sources, Connecting California, Volume II is appropriate for all levels of U.S. history study, especially courses that cover the unique eras, demographics, and geographies of California.
