Communication and Nonprofit Organizations: People and Practice underscores the importance of communication in nonprofit organizing and helps readers understand how communication operates within this unique context.

The text prepares readers to understand the nonprofit context, communicate confidently and competently with internal and external audiences, and manage communication challenges faced by nonprofit leaders, members, and volunteers. Individual chapters explore the key features and functions of nonprofit organizations, communication strategies needed to recruit and retain volunteers, employees, and board members, creating strategic communication plans, fundraising, governance, advocacy, and more. Each chapter includes case scenarios, learning outcomes, Spotlight on Scholarship sections, Learn More and Try This Boxes, and discussion questions to connect the material with practice, emphasize key concepts in existing literature, and encourage critical thinking and application.

Communication and Nonprofit Organizations is ideal for courses in nonprofit communication, organizational communication, business and professional communication, and nonprofit management. The book equips readers with the practical knowledge they need for effective organizational collaboration, donor recruitment, co-contributor engagement, and volunteer retention.

"I feel, especially, undergraduate students will connect with the text because of the tone and voice used, as well as the examples the author provides. The case studies are great and I really like how they are threaded throughout the entire chapter. The content covered is excellent and provides students with a well-rounded view of nonprofits. …[B]ecause it touches on advocacy in a way that most texts I have reviewed have not, there is an underlying thread, which is great."
Anne Converse Willkomm, Department of Communication and Associate Dean, Graduate College, Drexel University

"This is exactly what I was looking for in a textbook for this course [Nonprofit Communication]: understand the context, address unique NPO challenges, and apply strategic communication strategies. I liked how each chapter started with a case study. I am a fan of using case studies to help students understand real-world contexts that they may not be familiar with. I also like how the author used the real-world case examples throughout the chapter to help explain the various concepts. […] I loved that there were entire chapters devoted to leading and communicating with volunteers. This is one of the most uniquely challenging aspects of nonprofit communication, and having two full chapters dedicated to this topic is well-deserved. [...] I loved the way the real-world examples would really speak to college students’ interests and concerns. I thought the writing style was consistent and easy to read."
Cyndi Grobmeier, Department of Communication, Saint Xavier University

"This book addresses a timely topic on nonprofit communication and highlights the uniqueness and importance of communication in nonprofit management, governance, and development. It is a useful tool for students who are interested in a career in the nonprofit sector. The author’s writing is very engaging. I truly appreciate that the author connects her experience and insights with the theoretical concepts and communicative practice discussions throughout the book. The book has a strong emphasis on the connection between real-world scenario and theoretical concepts, which could provide applicable knowledge and guidance for students to understand the overall nonprofit management and communication. Students will appreciate that the textbook also includes many additional resources throughout the book regarding establishing and running a nonprofit."
Ming Xie, Department of Political Science and Criminal Justice, West Texas A&M University

"This content is very interesting and I think beneficial to students and practitioners alike. The opening scenarios are very engaging and draw the reader in right away. The author’s engaging writing style, including personal experiences, demonstrates a sincere engagement with nonprofit organizations. […] It clearly prepares students for improving communication internally and externally with nonprofit organizations. [...] I really like [all the pedagogical] features. They incorporate the different aspects of nonprofit organizations and bring the conversations from the practitioner, student, and scholar all to the same place. I also like the engaging personal experiences and detective role students are encouraged to take. [...] Lively and engaging is exactly how I would describe this writing, with enough conviction to be taken seriously. I think my students would enjoy the style."
Leigh Nanney Hersey, Department of Political Science, University of Louisiana Monroe

"This would make an ideal textbook for the course I teach [Nonprofit Organizations: Mission and Management]. Chapter 1 set the pace for the rest of the book. It provided a great understanding of not only what a nonprofit is but why they are needed and how they benefit our society."
Brandon Choe Sergent, Institute of Ethical, Management, and Organizational Leadership, Thomas More University

"I appreciate the focus on digging into why a nonprofit exists as a means to better communicate and the connection to theory and practice. […] I appreciate dedicating two chapters to volunteers and the need for organizations to prepare for volunteers and the challenges and advantages of volunteer engagement."
Crystal Trull, School of Leadership and Education Sciences, University of San Diego; School of Global Policy and Strategy, University of California, San Diego

"I like the use of the discussion questions provided by the author. [...] The case studies are an excellent addition as well for students to understand the 'why.' I do like the Profile in Practice to show the application of the material and how it applies to real people."
DeAnne Priddis, Department of Communication Studies, Middle Tennessee State University
