Summary
A Program Planning Manual for Public Health is an interactive ebook designed to help students cultivate the necessary skills required for public health program planning at the undergraduate level. The ebook guides students through the process of crafting a program plan with the goal of helping them develop a comprehensive program plan during an academic term. It offers concrete, hands-on exercises that bridge theoretical concepts with real-life applications in the field of public health.

The interactive ebook format allows students to read the text of each chapter and engage with digital learning activities—including assignments, quizzes, skill-builder activities, and videos—all within a single system.

The manual covers the stages of public health program design, from selecting a pertinent topic, assessing community needs, engaging stakeholders, and conducting literature reviews to setting goals, choosing applicable theories and models, and outlining strategies and activities. Students learn how to design impactful evaluations and logic models, prepare budgets with justification, and develop a conclusion for the program plan.

A Program Planning Manual for Public Health is an ideal supplementary resource for courses and programs in public health, especially those with focus on program planning. Through its structured approach, students are introduced not only to core competencies in public health but also their successful application within practice.

Cornelia Deagle is an assistant professor of public health in the Department of Population Health Sciences at Virginia Tech.
