The Basics of Health Insurance and Managed Care: An Interactive Course is a complete online course that equips students with the foundational knowledge they need to understand and navigate the complex world of health insurance and managed care.

Unique in presentation, highly accessible in nature, and transcending the literature generally provided to students within the discipline, the course content includes both a general overview of the insurance industry and information on current public policy changes. It features role-playing simulations that allow students to better understand the challenges facing the uninsured population; the hurdles of selecting health insurance plans for Medicare beneficiaries; and how insurance companies contract with healthcare providers to build networks. The course also features interactive assignments that teach students how to select a health insurance plan and calculate out-of-pocket expenses through the use of real-world scenarios.

The Basics of Health Insurance and Managed Care features 11 online learning modules. The opening module reviews the history of health insurance and managed care in the U.S. Later modules address the basics of health insurance, sales and enrollment, insurance oversight and regulation, and insurance premium development. Students learn about provider networks and payment, value-based insurance design, and utilization management. Additional modules explore quality and accreditation, pharmacy and mental health carve-outs, and managed care in public programs, including Medicare, Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and health insurance exchanges.
