Mental Health and the Black Man: A Mixtape Experience of Hardship and Harmony breaks new ground by weaving together the cultural expressions of Black American music and other forms of artistic expression with the psychological experiences of Black men. Like a carefully curated mixtape, the book blends academic research with personal narratives, creating a powerful soundtrack to understanding the underpinnings and nuances of Black male mental health.

Each chapter opens with rigorous academic analysis before transitioning into authentic personal stories, mirroring the structure of a mixtape as it moves between different moods and messages. The book examines critical issues affecting the mental wellness of Black men: historical trauma, police encounters, the school-to-prison pipeline, and continuous traumatic stress disorder. It also celebrates sources of healing and strength: restorative practices, mentorship, fatherhood, the Black Church, and the radical therapeutic power of hip-hop culture.

From educational environments to marriage and community support, this collection offers a comprehensive view of Black men's mental health experiences. Essential reading for students, scholars, practitioners, and anyone seeking to understand the multifaceted intersections of Black men, this book offers hope, empathy, and actionable insights for supporting Black men's psychological wellness through culturally responsive and enriching approaches.

Statements from the Authors in Recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month 2026

"Mental Health Awareness Month invites us to look honestly at who gets seen and who gets missed. For Black men, that looking has too often come with a price, silence, performance, or the expectation to carry what was never ours alone. Mental Health and the Black Man is our attempt to change the terms of that conversation. We built it like a mixtape, track by track, so readers could feel the full range: the grief, the faith, the fatherhood, the freedom still being fought for. This book is an invitation to listen differently and to heal in community."
    Michael Jones

"Black men are often overlooked or seen through stereotypical lenses! Truth be told, Black men are kings! How to know us is to break through the walls that historically blocked honest communication and take time to see us without the obstructions that damned visibility. How to help us, from a counseling perspective, is to truly understand us! Black men have the incredible power to overcome their circumstances, the continuous daily obstacles that oftentimes prevent them from achieving mental wellness. Helping professionals, the door is open, the work really begins in safe and culturally attuned counseling spaces. Mental Health and the Black Man is a musically inspired roadmap that will help you understand the complexities and inner workings of Black males. It is deliberately and intentionally designed to help you open your mind and build meaningful and trusting relationships with Black men that actually lead to healing! Get to really know us; step through the door, because to know us is to love us!"
