Get Up, Stand Up: Ubuntu and Elevating the Warrior Spirit in Black Men examines the deep psychology of Afrikan/Black men from an Afrikan Centered (Black) perspective, which helps to illuminate the Warrior essence of Black men. This essence is often compromised as Black men navigate hostile anti-Afrikan spaces. The text explores ancestral legacy, the impact of the Maafa (Afrikan enslavement), and contemporary challenges faced by Afrikan/Black men while focusing on fostering self-awareness, healing, and empowerment grounded in the principles of Ubuntu/Afrikan psychology. This book fortifies mental health workers, Black men, and those who love them with the tools to elevate the Warrior Spirit.
The book addresses the residual effect of cultural/historical trauma, race-based psychic injury, substance use, gender roles, and family and community dynamics. It introduces a particularized therapeutic model to Afrikan/Black men, analyzes psychosocial and spiritual dimensions of their being, and shares practical strategies like meditation, ritual, and dietary practices to enhance lived experiences. The role of melanin in mental health, attributes of racial socialization, and pathways to individual and communal healing are examined.

Mwata Kairi Emeka Sankara, Ph.D. (Kevin Washington) is a licensed, Afrikan-centered psychologist. He has served on the faculty of Counseling Psychology at Howard University and Marywood University and is a past chair of sociology and psychology at Grambling State University. Dr. Washington is Distinguished Visiting Associate Professor at Morehouse College who advances Ubuntu psychotherapy as a culturally sensitive modality for mental health counseling and psychotherapy for Black and brown people.
