Summary
Fundamentals of Addiction Counseling: An Introduction to Clinical Practice is designed to provide students with a comprehensive foundation in addiction treatment. Chapters include essential topics such as types and effects of psychoactive substances, assessment and diagnosis, and treatment modalities. In addition, critical and timely issues such as the use of evidence-based practices, opioid addiction, medication-assisted therapy, integrated healthcare, and working with involuntary clients are covered. Multicultural and ethical issues related to each major topic are also explored throughout the text, providing a timely and multifaceted understanding of the current status of addiction treatment.

The book stimulates critical thinking and applied learning with the inclusion of case vignettes, student exercises, quizzes, and group-based activities in each chapter. In addition, the text is intended to equip behavioral health professionals with critical knowledge and enhanced understanding of addiction to effectively inform clinical practice.

Fundamentals of Addiction Counseling is designed to support graduate-level courses in counseling, psychology, social work, and similar disciplines. An accompanying workbook, Fundamentals of Addiction Counseling: Clinical Practice Manual, enhances the learning experience for students, providing them with case studies, reflection questions, and chapter quizzes.
