Foundations of Substance Use and Addiction Counseling: Principes and Applied Practice is designed to acquaint readers with the foundations of addictions counseling. It provides a robust grounding in theories, models, and actionable insights essential for counseling services in substance use and behavioral addictions.

The text distinguishes itself by blending scholarly content with practical real-world examples, using a scholar-lite voice for accessibility and applying a backward design based on learning outcomes aligned with discipline-specific standards.

The text covers the history and development of addictions counseling, core foundations of substance use and behavioral addictions, neurobiological and medical aspects, and diverse modern approaches to treatment including motivational interviewing and acceptance and commitment therapy. It features case studies, call-out boxes for real-world perspectives, and scaffolded approaches to more complex topics such as psychopharmacology to facilitate practical comprehension and discussion.

Aligned with CACREP standards for clinical mental health counseling and addictions specialization areas, Foundations of Substance Use and Addiction Counseling is ideal for introductory courses in substance use and addictions counseling.
