Summary
Essential Elements of Career Practice, now in its fourth edition, offers readers an accessible look at how to “do” career intervention, clearly defining the profession and the competencies career practitioners need to pursue as part of their training. Written by leading experts Spencer Niles and Norman Amundson, this text focuses on the practice of career intervention through the application of basic techniques and resources useful in supporting the theories of career choice and development.

Across the book's 12 chapters, the authors provide case examples of career practitioner-client dialogues to illustrate the application of career theories. They also integrate unique resources (assessments, websites, and informal interventions) to support the work of career practitioners.

    Key Updates to This Edition:

    • Contains the latest career theories in addition to the more “classic” ones.
    • Presents a strengthened focus on the application of career interventions.
    • Broadens the scope to address the work of career practitioners in a wide range of practice settings.

This text is ideal for any undergraduate or graduate-level course in career intervention and fits well with the work of counseling practitioners, career coaches, and career advisors.

Spencer Niles is a professor of counselor education and co-director of the THRIVE Research and Intervention Center at The College of William & Mary. He served as the dean in the School of Education at W&M from 2013-2020, where he was ranked as the 11th most influential dean of education in the United States. Dr. Niles is the 79th president of the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision. He was awarded the Thomas Hohenshil National Publication Award by the American Counseling Association in 2019. He was twice elected as President of the National Career Development Association.
Norman Amundson is a professor emeritus of counseling psychology at the University of British Columbia, Canada. He also holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Umea, Sweden. Dr. Amundson has published widely, and his work has been translated into many different languages. He has received a number of national and international awards including the Eminent Career Award from NCDA, an honorary life membership in the Swedish Career Development Association, and a special lifetime achievement award by the Canadian Education and Research Institute for Counselling.
