Summary
A Macro Approach to Addressing Drug Use: Centering the Person in the Context of Structures offers a critical examination of the United States’ approach to drug policy and its effects on individuals and society. The text proposes a reconsideration of societal perceptions and policies, suggesting a shift towards a humanistic, pragmatic, and evidence-informed approach.

The book critically analyzes the dominant narratives and the stigmatization associated with drug use, while advocating for decriminalization and a public health approach that includes harm reduction strategies and equitable access to treatment. It underscores the importance of data to inform policy decisions, addressing structural factors such as poverty, education, and housing that contribute to the complexity of drug use and addiction.

A Macro Approach to Addressing Drug Use is ideal for courses in public health, social work, political science, and sociology, especially those focused on drug policy, social policy, and human rights. The book provides a comprehensive perspective grounded in the lived experiences of individuals affected by drug policies and challenges readers to consider the balance between individual responsibility and societal obligations.
